Four hours of legendary rock in Alicante with Celtas Cortos, rock bandwith celtic influences born in the 80s; Los Suaves’ heavy metal from Galicia; Medina Azahara, an icon of the Andalusian Rock; La Fuga will be coming from Cantabria; and Tako, the boys from Zaragoza with their own style.

Water park Aqualandia in Benidorm opens on May 19th

Aqualandia-AlicanteAqualandia, one of Benidorm’s most popular theme parks (and there are 5 in total!), will be opening soon, on Saturday 19th May 2012 at 10am.

It was the first water park to be opened in Spain, founded in 1985 on the Sierra Helada hill. It counts with different leisure areas surrounded by natural and landscaped areas. Apart from the typical vertiginous-heights-water slides, you will also find a pool area with a children’s playground, a waves pool, jacuzzis, aerobics classes, performances of acrobatic jumps…

It caters for all ages, and it is a fantastic activity for groups of teenagers and families with children.
Otherwise, Aqualandia has a wide variety of self-service restaurants, snack bars, kiosks, cafeterias, ice-cream shops, and different foods like hamburgers, barbecues, pizzas, kebabs or creps.It is advisable to go early in the morning with own food and generous amounts of sunscreen. The application of solar protector several times a day is essential (seriously!). And if you take picnics or even a container, they will not put any objections.

Moreover, there are also spacious changing rooms, rental of lockers and safetydeposit boxes, ATM service, rental of hammocks and floats, and souvenir and photography shops.

How to get there

From Alicante you may get on Tram train number 1 towards Benidorm and get off at the last stop. Then, at the station’s entrance, catch bus number 1 with destination Aqualandia-Mundomar. This bus goes along the Alfonso Puchades, Europa, Mediterráneo and Ametlla de Mar avenues, so locals and holidaymakers may use it too.

By car from Alicante you may use the no. 332 National Road or the AP-7 Highway (toll road). The first one, CN-332, goes through the mountains and has quite a few curves, but it takes only 10-15 more than the other one and it is free. Map: http://g.co/maps/gc4nd

The New Rio Connection Bar In Benidorm

The Hotel RioPark in Benidorm, translated into English as The River Park, had some spare waste ground, some of you may remember it, situated behind the Swimming pool bar.  José, the Hotel Manager, recognised that this would be the ideal opportunity for a new venture!Rio-connection-Benidorm

Apart from its already legendary beach, the castle, the harbor, the nightlife, the theme parks Terra Mitica, Aqualandia, Aqua Natura, Terra Natura and Mundo Mar…Alicante counts with an ideal orography to practice several sports, like hiking.

This tool will allow us to select whatever we would like to discover (I am putting in Spanish the translation just in case): Short Walking Trails (Senderos de Pequeño Recorrido – SPR), caves (cuevas), natural sites (parajes naturales), camping areas (zonas de acampada), recreational areas with barbecue facilities (áreas recreativas), trails under the sea (senderos bajo el mar), marine reserves (reservas marinas)…It is a very complete tool that also marks the coordinates, roads and highways, and offers additional information on any of these touristic attractions.

First Five Peregrine Falcons born in Terra Natura park

For the very first time, the Terra Natura nature and animal park from Benidorm has obtained within its premises the reproduction in captivity of the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), which means traveler hawk, and is a protected and vulnerable species.

Last February, Terra Natura had the birth of a rhinoceros. Now, the family of 32 birds of prey of 10 different species, two storks and other tropical birds of Terra Natura has also increased with these 5 recently born hawk pigeons and other 3 baby owls.

When the park’s experts detected that the female peregrine had put eggs, they activated the protocol to increase the chances of survival of the offspring: the eggs were withdrawn and allocated inside an incubator for 10 to 12 days at a constant temperature between 37,3 and 37,4 degrees, since at a lower or higher temperature, they would die. After 30 days in there, the eggs finally hatched and started to be bred by their parents.

The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest flying bird on Earth, reaching over 200 kilometres per hour, and has one of the most global distributions of any bird of prey, as it can be found on every continent except Antarctica. Unlike other animals, the female is bigger than the male. They are skilful flyers and hunters. They do not build nests, and use ledges of rocky cliffs or buildings, or abandoned stick nests of other species instead.

Music in May with Benidorm Ithaca Concerts

For May 2012, Benidorm’s Town Hall and the Ithaca Foundation have programmed weekly music shows at the Town Hall’s ‘Salón de Actos’, located in the Plaza SSMM Los Reyes de España (La Aigüera Park).

Friday 4th May- Concert of the soprano Regina Sánchez and the pianist Francisco Pérez Perelló, professor at the Music School of the Valencian Community. They will interpret pieces of Respighi, Strauss, Brahms, Fauré, Falla, Schumann, Schubert, Granados and Liszt.

a-piacereFriday 11th May- Concert by Javier Guna, Ximo Sancho & Josep Vicent Giner, they will interpret in oboe and English horn, bassoon and key – respectively – a “baroque” repertoire of Vivaldi, Bach, Haendel and Telemann.

Friday 18th May- Guitar concert by Vicent Ballester, with lyrics of Federico García Lorca, Fernando Sor, Manuel García, Francisco de Quevedo, Heitor Villalobos and Astor Piazzolla interpreted by Silvia Peña.

Friday 25th May-Jazz music night with Nova Música Jazz Quartet, with Pepe Fuster on the saxophone, Manolo Cordero at the piano, Alex Villar on counterbass and Jaume Gallego on the drums.

Thursday 31st May- Concert by the String Quartet A Piacere, with Ana Requena and Patricia Genís, on the violins, Miguel Falomir with the viola, Yolanda Bueso, on the violoncello, and Pepe Fuster, saxophone.

Friday 8th June- Recital of poems of Germain Droogenbroodt, with Rosa Vidal to the violoncello and Vicent Ballester on guitar.

All performances will start at 8pm and the entrance can be purchased for 12 Euros, or you may obtain a general ticket to attend to all concerts for 50 Euros.

Seville’s April Fair…in Benidorm!

April-Fair-BenidormAnd with April arrives the famous Seville April Fair. But as in Benidorm we like to celebrate everything, we also have our own April Fair here.

As from today Monday 23rd and until this Saturday 28th April 2012, Benidorm’s Tourism Council together with the Esturión Restaurant, Bar Angelillo, Taberna Andaluza, the Cazorla Restaurant, the Rías Baixas Restaurant and the Sabores del sur Isla Cristina Restaurant, organize April’s Fair in Benidorm.

Tonight at 10pm will take place the inauguration of the special lighting at each of the six participating establishments. Along these days, special Andalucian dishes will be served. Moreover, these bars and restaurants will offer free Flamenco classes (typical Spanish dance from Andalucía) between 5.30pm and 7pm, and live performances of Ramón el extremeño, Chaito, Dorama, Desaire and H. Martínez.

Beauty Contest Final in Benidorm

Apart from the celebration of three rhythmic gymnastics competitions, this weekend in Benidorm there will be a models contest.

The final of the ‘Miss Venus Española Internacional’ contest (Miss International Spanish Venus) will take place next Sunday 22nd April 2012, at 8pm, in Benidorm Palace. 

A total of 19 young women in representation of Spain’s different regions will be competing to show they are one of the country’s four most beautiful, charismatic and elegant ladies, suitable to participate as the Spanish representatives at 4 international beauty contests. A distinctive characteristic of this competition is that the models represent regions (mountains, islands and coasts) instead of provinces. 

LYA-Amalia-BarberoThe hosts of the gala will be Gloria Martínez (international Spanish model) and the musician, model and actor Javi Mota. As guest artist we will have Amalia Barbero, ‘Lya’, a young songwriter and singer who has been gathering numerous awards in the past few years, and who has worked together with international artists like Alejandro Sanz or El Arrebato.  She will live up the gala with her music.

Tickets are on sale at Benidorm Palace’s box office and through the Savings Bank CAM’s Servicam service. The general entrance costs 15 Euros, and they charge 40 Euros for the VIP Area, which includes the coronation party.

Mexican Singer Luis Miguel comes back to Spain after 5 years

The successful Mexican Luis Miguel, who sings since he was 12 and has gathered since then numerous awards worldwide, will be the first artist to perform at the brand new outdoor auditorium of the Exhibition Centre of Alicante (IFA: Institución Ferial Alicantina). The space is in the proximity of Alicante’s airport, and has a capacity of 12,000 spectators.

After 5 years without offering concerts in Spain, Luis Miguel will be presenting his tour in Santiago de Compostela, Cáceres, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Málaga, Seville, Gran Canaria, Barcelona, and Madrid.

Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournaments in Benidorm

Here you are, a different plan: the Spanish Royal Federation of Gymnastics has chosen Benidorm to celebrate 3 gymnastics competitions at the L’Illa de Benidorm Sports Pavilion from April 20th until 22nd. Which are:

The VII Individual Base National Championship,
the XVII Queen Sofia’s Cup for Rhythmic Gymnastics,
and the First Edition of the International individual Junior and Senior teams ‘City of Benidorm’ Tournament.

In the Cup of Queen Sophia there will be 60 gymnasts of 13 autonomous regions, since only the best are admitted.
And in Benidorm’s International Tournament we will have 5o representatives of 5 nationalities, coming from the United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, France and Spain. Three of them, classified for the next Olympics.

Among gymnasts, technicians, judges and spectators, Benidorm will host more than 4,000 people.
