Fallas 2013 in Benidorm
The Fallas are the main celebration in the Valencian Community (Spain), being the most important fiestas focused in the city of Valencia. This festivity is considered by UNESCO as a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest, which are organized in honour to Saint Joseph, patron of carpenters. Furthermore, Fallas are also celebrated in other towns on the Community, such as Elda, Denia and Benidorm.
After the quite soaked last year’s Fallas, in 2013 Benidorm longs for March 15th to come, when every year the Plantà takes place. That is to say, the public exhibition of the Mayor and Infant monuments of the city’s 3 Fallas Commitees, meaning a total of 6 Fallas.
These will be on show until the 19th, Saint Joseph’s Day, when the Cremà is held (they are burnt under a controlled fire at midnight in presence of firemen). It is a very magic and exciting night, crowned with fireworks. Additionally, during these 4 days we will have despertàs and mascletàs, very typical in Valencian fiestas where powder is never absent.
On Saturday 16th we will have the commemoration of the finding of the Lady of Suffrage, Benidorm’s Patron Saint. At 5.30am (yes, early hours!) the ‘festeros’ (people who take part in the organization of these fiestas and really feel their importance) will be taking the Virgin to the beaches. At 7am, they will be having mugs of hot chocolate, followed by a mass at 10am at Saint James’ and Saint Ana’s Church (Old Town), where the floral offering will take place at 6pm.
